He was still in high school when he worked out that running a logging crew paid better than running the high school.
Daniel Dean grew up in Magnolia, Texas, and by the time he was a student at Magnolia High School he was cutting timber on the side. The arithmetic was hard to argue with: some weeks that logging crew earned him more than the school’s principal made. He has been running crews ever since.
In 1993 he put his own name on the door. 33 years later the equipment yard is still in Magnolia, Texas — a few miles from where he started — and Daniel still walks the property before the machines do. If you have a fence line you want kept, a stand of oaks you want left alone, or water sitting where it shouldn’t, that walk is when it gets sorted out.
That is the whole reason this is a family business and not a franchise. You get the man who has been doing this since high school, not a dispatcher reading off a screen.
