How much does pond work cost?
Pond construction, repair, and dredging are all priced per project, not off a rate card. The volume of material that has to move, and what the soil around your property will do, are what actually drive the number. Below is what swings a pond quote — we walk the site, measure it, and put a firm number in writing at no charge.
What moves the price
- Surface area and depth
- How big the pond is and how deep you want it is the base number the rest of the quote builds on — a small stock pond and a multi-acre lake move very different volumes of dirt.
- What the soil is made of
- A pond only holds water if the soil around it will let it. Clay content and soil PI often need a look — sometimes bore samples — before we know whether the native ground will hold, or whether clay has to be brought in and compacted for a liner.
- Where the dug material goes
- Dirt that comes out of the hole does not disappear. Building the dam, a pad, or raised mounds from it costs less than hauling it off site, so spoil placement is one of the first things we work out.
- How much silt or muck has to come out
- On a desilting or dredging job, the price scales with the volume of accumulated silt, sediment, or muck removed, not the surface area of the pond. A shallow skim job and a pond that has not been cleaned in years are different jobs.
- Water control during the work
- Repair, dam work, and desilting usually need existing water pumped out or otherwise managed before equipment can get to the bottom, banks, or dam. That step adds time on top of the excavation itself.
- Access to the water
- Getting an excavator or amphibious machine to the edge of the water matters. Tight waterfront lots, soft banks, and long pushes from the nearest solid ground all slow the work down.
- Extras beyond the hole itself
- Aeration systems, fountains, docks, and shoreline stabilization are priced separately from the dig — each is its own line item on top of construction, repair, or desilting.
Tell us roughly how large a pond you are thinking, or what needs fixing on an existing one, and we will come measure what has to move. The estimate is free and the number comes to you in writing before any equipment rolls.

Location determines the size and shape of your pond. Gently sloping land is the most cost-effective to build on, while steeper terrain requires more earthwork. We strip and preserve your topsoil for replacement after construction, and aim for an optimal depth around 18 feet to support both cold and warm water fish year-round.

- Imported clay soil and compacting for proper water seal
Pond Repair
Many ponds leak due to improper construction or soil composition. Daniel Dean drains the pond, removes 2-3 feet of existing dirt, then compacts quality clay material to create a proper water-tight lining. Modern excavators can separate clay from sand easily, ensuring only the best material is used.

Pond De-Silting
Silt from dead plant leaves, lawn clippings, and water plants breaks down over time, gradually filling your pond with dirty sediment and reducing depth. De-silting is a messy but necessary job that restores your pond to its original capacity and improves water quality.
- Remove accumulated silt and organic sediment
- Restore original pond depth and volume
- Improve water clarity and overall quality
- Messy but necessary—proper equipment makes all the difference
Inlet & Outfall
Installing inlet pipes captures water flowing into your pond and reduces erosion around the banks. Outlet systems maintain optimal water levels by controlling discharge rates, preventing overflow damage during heavy rains.

Pond and lake questions we get asked
Yes. Daniel Dean digs, shapes, and builds ponds and lakes with his own equipment across the Greater Houston area — we are not a broker sending the job to someone else. That includes new construction, expansion or reshaping of an existing pond, and repair. We start with the area shown on the plan or discussed on site, strip and stockpile the topsoil where it can be saved, and shape the pond bottom, slopes, and dam to the depths and limits agreed on.
Before work starts
Whether a permit applies to pond work depends on if the water is isolated or connects to a stream or wetland — a distinction worth settling before equipment is scheduled. You can read the current rules straight from the EPA's Section 404 permit program, and we confirm what applies to your property during the site visit rather than guessing at it from an address.
If you are weighing us against another contractor, the work our customers describe is a better read on what we are like to deal with than anything we could write here.
